Chapter Twenty

In Which Killer Adjustments Are Made

Two days later, Lara walked across the gangplank to their ride home. She kept her eyes peeled for trouble in the form of a purple dragon. Or blue. Or green. He had even turned white once. Lara wondered if there were any colors his scales could not do.

There was no sign of Killer anywhere, but that didn’t mean much. She had checked and rechecked her pack before carrying it out of her room. James and Matthew had been enlisted as extra lookouts to scan the path to the dock for unwanted company. A few diggers had been sighted, but they were not Killer and showed little to no interest in the travelers.

Once aboard, Lara systematically searched the ship from stern to bow. She asked each individual sailor to be aware of a potential stowaway. Three full sweeps of the craft revealed no hidden creatures. Lara could not claim confidence that Killer wasn’t stashed away behind a crate, though. Many more boxes were making the return trip with them. He could be anywhere.

She would have felt better if he’d been in her room that morning. The original plan had been to entrust Nori with his care and distraction until the ship left. Instead, she’d let Nori hug her goodbye at breakfast that morning and been on constant alert ever since. It was exhausting.

At long last, the crew and passengers were safely aboard and the cargo properly stowed. Lara allowed herself to relax a bit when the deck began moving under her feet. She felt the tension begin to melt away as she let out a breath she had unknowingly been holding during the last few departure tasks.

“Looks like you made it. Safe,” Matthew teased as he tugged on one of her braids.

“I didn’t think it was possible, but”—Lara took a deep breath of salty air—“I think you’re right.”

“Now that I’m not needed to guard the gangplank, can I go stash my stuff?” James wanted to know. He found Lara’s dragon avoidance antics amusing.

“Yes, of course,” Lara told him. “Thank you so much. This is a great weight off my mind. I don’t have space in my life for a pet without boundaries.”

James moved to his pack and hefted it onto his back. An inquisitive chirp sounded from the vicinity of his shoulder. He froze.

“No,” Lara said in a horrified whisper. “It can’t be.”

James turned back with an equal expression of dismay. “I checked it this morning. I swear.”

“Oh, I believe you. It’s not your fault.” Lara’s voice was dead. “It’s his.” She pointed to the fuchsia head poking out of James’ bag.

Matthew had to bite his lip, hard. “It looks like you get to work on teaching him boundaries now.”

Lara’s scowl was fierce as she grudgingly accepted the dragon from James. “How am I going to keep you from falling overboard?” She muttered to the scallywag as she took him down to her cabin.

Fortunately for Lara, falling overboard didn’t seem to be on Killer’s agenda.
